University Hall (UH) has the distinction of setting the academic tone for the U-Mass Boston campus. The building does this in several ways. First, UH houses a large range of classrooms including smaller 20 seat rooms, mid-size case study rooms, a computational team room and a series of larger lecture halls. Secondly, UH houses three studio-based departments – Art, Performing Arts and Chemistry, which is a distinctive amalgamation of Arts and Sciences. Thirdly, UH has special facilities that translate to a wider community: For example, it contains a 500-seat auditorium, a fully equipped black box theater, a recital hall, and an exhibition gallery. Fourthly, the overall triangular mass encloses a dramatic multi-level atrium and café that is filled with students at any given day.

A modern and unusual academic building, with views of the Boston skyline and the surrounding harbour, University Hall has become a beloved investment. The exterior design was composed as a companion building to the Campus Center and together they form the arrival crescent where students arrive and depart each day. University Hall is a heavily used building and hence, makes a big impact on both students and visitors.

For this U-Mass Boston Project, William F. Wilson FAIA was principal in charge at Wilson Architects. He was the PIC from the start of the project to occupancy. Throughout all project phases, from pre-design, budgeting and programming to schematic design, design development, and the completion of Construction Documents, he led the team. HGA acquired Wilson Architects after the project was complete.
